Documents and tools for applying for NTR

The formal basis of the NTR Quality System

For all producers, the NTR Documents constitute the formal, technical and contractual basis for participation in the NTR Quality System. They define the requirements that must be met in order to produce, mark and market NTR-certified products.

Compliance with the applicable NTR Documents is mandatory for all producers, regardless of production type, location or market.

NTR Documents

Role of the NTR Documents

The NTR Documents define, among other things:

  • durability principles and protection concepts
  • requirements for production and factory production control
  • conditions for third-party quality control and audits
  • rules for marking, traceability and use of the NTR mark

Only products produced in accordance with the applicable NTR Documents and verified through independent control may be marketed as NTR-certified.

General requirements linked to the documents

Based on the NTR Documents, all producers are required to:

  • enter into a contract with an NWPC-approved control body
  • undergo independent third-party quality control
  • pay applicable licence and system fees
  • ensure sufficient competence and organisational capability
  • apply correct NTR marking and product information
  • support correct and responsible use of the NTR system

These requirements apply continuously and form part of compliance with the NTR Documents.

Supporting fact sheets and guidance

To support understanding and practical application of the NTR system, NWPC publishes supplementary information material. These documents do not replace the NTR Documents but explain responsibilities and administrative requirements.

Responsibilities for maintaining the NTR licence
A fact sheet summarising ongoing producer responsibilities related to compliance, quality control, marking, reporting and engagement in the NTR system.

Producer affiliation and reporting information
A fact sheet describing reporting and administrative requirements, particularly applicable to producers without affiliation to a Nordic member association.

Tools and information resources

The NTR system is supported by common tools and information resources, including:

  • public listings of licensed producers and certificates
  • published lists of approved preservatives and technologies
  • information systems supporting third-party quality control
  • official guidance and communications from NWPC

These tools support transparency and coordination but do not replace the requirements set out in the NTR Documents.

Education and information

Education and information activities related to the NTR system are offered by NWPC and other industry actors. These activities are not generally mandatory, but producers are encouraged to use them when available to support correct application of the NTR Documents.

Knowledge and competence may also be provided through preservative manufacturers, technology suppliers, consultants and internal company training.
