How to become an NTR producer

A clear and structured path to NTR certification

Becoming an NTR producer is a structured process designed to ensure that all producers meet the same quality, competence and control requirements. The process is transparent, predictable and aligned with European standards for product certification.

NTR certification applies to individual production sites. Each site must be assessed and approved separately.

Step 1 – Application for affiliation

A company wishing to join the NTR system submits an application for affiliation to the Nordic Wood Preservation Council (NWPC).

At this stage, the producer:

  • provides information about the production site and processes
  • identifies the intended NTR classes and products
  • appoints an approved quality control body

When the application is accepted and the affiliation fee is paid, the producer becomes an Affiliated Producer.

Affiliated Producers may participate in education and information activities but may not yet use the NTR mark.

Step 2 – Preparation and initial audit

During the affiliation phase, the producer prepares its production, documentation and internal controls to comply with the NTR requirements.

This includes:

  • implementing factory production control
  • ensuring that equipment, procedures and records meet NTR requirements
  • training key personnel as required by the NTR system

An independent, approved control body performs an initial audit of the production site to verify compliance with the relevant NTR documents.

Step 3 – Certification and licence

When all requirements are fulfilled and a valid NTR product certificate has been issued by the control body, NWPC grants the producer a licence to use the NTR mark.

The producer now becomes a Licensed Producer and may:

  • manufacture and sell NTR-marked products
  • use the NTR mark in accordance with the branding rules
  • be listed as an NTR-certified producer

The licence is valid as long as all requirements are maintained and fees are paid.

Step 4 – Ongoing quality control

NTR certification is based on continuous compliance. Licensed Producers are subject to regular audits and inspections carried out by the approved control body.

Ongoing obligations include:

  • maintaining factory production control
  • keeping accurate production and treatment records
  • complying with all applicable NTR documents
  • participating in required training and updates

Non-compliance may lead to sanctions, suspension or withdrawal of the right to use the NTR mark.

Producer status in the NTR system

During participation in the NTR system, a producer may have one of the following statuses:

  • Applicant – application submitted, no rights to use the NTR mark
  • Affiliated Producer – accepted into the system, preparatory phase
  • Licensed Producer – fully certified, right to use the NTR mark
  • Suspended Producer – temporary loss of marking rights due to non-compliance
  • Terminated Producer – permanent withdrawal from the system

Each status has clearly defined rights and obligations.

Who can apply

NTR certification is open to producers who:

  • carry out industrial wood preservation or wood modification
  • operate a production site with the necessary permits and authorisations
  • commit to independent third-party quality control
  • comply with the NTR documents and terms

European producers are welcome under the same conditions.

Support during the process

NWPC and the approved control bodies provide guidance throughout the affiliation and certification process. Education and training are integral parts of becoming and remaining an NTR producer.
