The process is transparent, predictable and aligned with European standards for product certification.

NTR certification applies to individual production sites. Each site must be assessed and approved separately.

Step 1 – Application for affiliation

A company wishing to join the NTR system submits an application for affiliation to the Nordic Wood Preservation Council (NWPC).

At this stage, the producer:

provides information about the production site and processes

identifies the intended NTR classes and products

appoints an approved quality control body

When the application is accepted and the affiliation fee is paid, the producer becomes an Affiliated Producer.

Affiliated Producers may participate in education and information activities but may not yet use the NTR mark.

Step 2 – Preparation and initial audit

During the affiliation phase, the producer prepares its production, documentation and internal controls to comply with the NTR requirements.

This includes:

implementing factory production control

ensuring that equipment, procedures and records meet NTR requirements

training key personnel as required by the NTR system

An independent, approved control body performs an initial audit of the production site to verify compliance with the relevant NTR documents.

Step 3 – Certification and licence

When all requirements are fulfilled and a valid NTR product certificate has been issued by the control body, NWPC grants the producer a licence to use the NTR mark.

The producer now becomes a Licensed Producer and may:

manufacture and sell NTR-marked products

use the NTR mark in accordance with the branding rules

be listed as an NTR-certified producer

The licence is valid as long as all requirements are maintained and fees are paid.

Step 4 – Ongoing quality control

NTR certification is based on continuous compliance.
